About this tool
A discount is a percent of the original price. This tool finds the sale price, reconstructs the original from a sale sticker, or works out the percent off when you know both prices.
How to use
- Choose whether you need the sale price, the original price, or the discount percent.
- Enter the numbers you already have.
- Read sale price, savings and the discount percent.
Formula and methodology
Sale = original × (1 − percent/100). Original = sale ÷ (1 − percent/100). Percent off = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. A 100% discount cannot reconstruct an original price, and a sale above the original is rejected.
Worked example
20% off 2,499 is a 499.80 saving and a 1,999.20 sale price. A 1,999 sale at 20% off implies an original of 2,498.75.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include sales tax?+
No. It only applies a percent to the prices you enter.
Can the discount be more than 100%?+
No. A discount above 100% would produce a negative price.
